This must be one of the most foundational truths I have ever learned.

I am a naturally proactive, ambitious and positive person. It is in my nature to be ‘doing’ all the time as I think that doing is the path to achieving. Recently though, I have had a change of heart.

I’ve tried, for more years than I care to remember, to set goals at the beginning of the year… and keep them. I’ll make a time when I just sit and concentrate on exactly what I want to achieve. I apply the famous SMART formula to them and get them all neatly scheduled. Well, I manage to keep to this schedule for about 2 weeks and then things start to slip. and the reasons are all legitimate (or at least they are in my head). Guilt starts to kick in, self condemnation, hopelessness and then finally I just give up on them so that the bad feelings will go away. This has been a continuous cycle in my life for too long a time.

So, now I’ve started delving into the reasons behind my behaviour. Why do I do this? What is it that causes failure to adhere to the set goals, over and over again? It’s a wonderful process and I’m discovering empowering as well as limiting beliefs I have about myself, every day.

‘Heal the Root to Fix the Fruit’ has taken on new significance to me and as I work through my belief systems, my roots are being healed. Soon, I’ll be able to move past those old barriers and truly be as peaceful and productive as I’ve always desired to be.

I’ll let you know what I find out along the way.
