What they’re doin’

Have you ever found yourself welling up when you read a story of how one person’s actions have impacted the life of another? I must admit that I have. Many, many times.

Stories like these from the ‘Compassion International’ website:

I’d like to introduce you to the amazing world of volunteering.

  • Just some of the benefits that I’ve experienced:
  • Giving of your time and talents makes you feel so good about yourself and what you give
  • Seeing a smile on the face of someone who you’ve just helped, is totally addictive
  • The talent/skill you have can help someone to feed their family, mend a relationship or start a successful business
  • You can become part of a community of people who love to help others, making new friends along the way
  • Volunteering, as a family, is a wonderful way to create family memories. You get to teach your children compassion, consideration for others, awareness of the society around them and the priceless gift of giving something away to help someone else.
  • You can learn new skills as well as develop your existing ones. Adding your volunteering experience to your CV is a definite plus
  • There’s no feeling quite like laying your head on your pillow at night, knowing that you’ve made a difference in the world, today!

I have personally received such tremendous benefit from volunteering over the years. I spend at least 3 hours a week giving my time and talents away in the area where I live, and at least 2 hours, online. (I reckon I get most of the wrinkles around my eyes from the grin that’s on my face after helping out this way – LOVE it!)

So, a couple of FAQ’s

What can volunteers do?

  • The sky is literally the limit! Volunteers are needed in every area of life. You can give of your time, your talent and your money
How much time do I need to volunteer for?
  • As much, or as little, as you’d like. Realistically sit down and look at your week and start out with a couple of hours that you have spare. You can volunteer during the day, at night, on weekends; face to face, over the phone or on the web; a week, day or hour at a time.

Will I be interviewed?

  • It’s always a good thing to go into a position knowing all that is available to you as well as all that is expected of you. This counts for you as well as the organisation. So, there will probably be some kind of ‘orientation’ and informal interview just so that everyone knows what’s going on.
Can I leave if I don’t like it?
  • The very nature of volunteering means that you are voluntarily giving your time and talent for free, so you are free to leave if you don’t like it. I’d recommend that you have a word with someone like a supervisor before you go, just to talk through any issues that may have arisen.
Will I get training?
  • Levels of training will vary between organisations, so make sure that you know enough to be able to do your task well.
Will I need qualifications?
  • Not usually. Many organisations that have volunteers will ask you to do tasks that will fit in with your skill set.
I want to volunteer – what do I do next?
  • Locally = look for adverts in your local Library, Town Council offices, telephone directories, shop windows
  • Internet = Search for volunteering opportunities in your local area as well as opportunities that exist online. You can volunteer by sponsoring a new business with start up capital or seeing that a child gets an education.
  • By organisation = if you have a particular passion then seek out the organisations that cater to it. Do you like animals? Then search for animal related charities for example. Heart for the homeless? Want to see Youth reach their full potential? Love looking after the elderly? There’s a volunteering position just waiting for you!

So now… I have a challenge for you!

I pledge to increase my volunteering to a minimum of 5 hours a week. In the extra 2 hours that I’m pledging, I will find a different organisation than the two I currently volunteer at and will report back to you on how it goes.

What will you pledge? How will you choose to impact your own life, the life of your family and the lives of those you choose to share with?

Let me share this with you…

The world NEEDS what you have to give! There is something on the inside of you, something that only you can give that can make a difference in someone’s life! I DARE you to give some of your time, your gifts and your heart to help someone else have a better experience of life – and I guarantee you this – YOU WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN!

Comment below and share your experiences with us. I’m sooo excited about all the life-changing stories that will be shared!
